Iraq to Purchase Natural Gas From Iran
Tehran, Dec. 15, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iranian Oil Minister Masoud Mirkazemi at a meeting with Iraqi Electricity Minister Karim Wahid Al-Hassan in Tehran announced the expansion of energy cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
Mirakazemi said the Iraqi counterpart is eager to purchase natural gas from Iran in order boost its electricity production to serve the ever growing domestic consumption.
Iraqi electricity production and its related infrastructures have sustained major damages due to the ongoing war and toppling of Saddam Hussein regime after the US invasion of the country. The overall electricity production has therefore fallen behind in terms of growing demands in recent years.
The Iranian Oil Minister added that Iranian private sectors and companies would soon export various types of fuels to Iraq. The Iraqi Electricity Minister in turn voiced his government willingness to forge greater economic cooperation with Iran especially in the field of energy.
Iraq is one the world’s largest holder of oil and gas resources but the country due to protracted political and social instabilities has been lagging behind its oil and gas developments in recent years.
