Obama Better Send Back His Nobel Peace Prize
Dec. 18, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - The revolutionary President of Venezuela attending the 15th UN environmental summit in Copenhagen lambasted capitalism and lack of political will on the part of world’s richest nations to devise fundamental changes necessary to save the planet.
During his speech which received an standing ovation Chavez criticized the US President for his warmongering attitudes and called on him to immediately return the so called Nobel Peace Prize back to the issuer. ‘Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize almost the same day as he sent 30,000 soldiers to kill innocent people in Afghanistan, Obama should give back the prize’ he said. Chavez voted for Bolivian President Evo Morales as the one that would have been a better choice for such an award.
Elsewhere in his speech, Chavez slammed the Netherlands over its collaborations with the US imperialists against Latin America. He accused the Dutch government of staying in islands Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire close to Venezuelan coast longer than it should while helping the US gain access to those islands. ‘They are three islands in Venezuela's territorial waters, but they are still under an imperial regime: the Netherlands, Europe should know that the North American empire is filling these islands with weapons, assassins, American intelligence units, and spy planes and war ships.’ Chavez noted.
The progressive leader of Venezuela warned that imperialists’ cooperation is a long-term counter measure against independent governments throughout Latin America including Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Cuba. ‘It's a threat to all the people of Latin America and the Caribbean,’ he said.
Chavez then elaborated on the subject of the climate change. He criticized the summit by saying that the whole process underway in Copenhagen was not democratic. ‘There is a group of countries that believe they are superior to those of us from the South, to those of us from the Third Word… this does not surprise us… we are again faced with powerful evidence of global imperial dictatorship,’ Chavez said.
Like the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who yesteday said that capitalism was the root-cause of global environmental crisis, Chavez also pointed at the capitalist system as the major cause of climate disaster. He said all people must struggle against capitalism, and if we don’t, life on the planet will disappear. ‘Human activity is exceeding the limits of sustainability and endangering life on the planet, but the impacts of climate change are also being felt disproportionately by the world’s poor, ‘Chavez explained.
Chavez made it clear how much discrepancies could be observes when looking at the latest charts for global emissions. He noted the richest countries with 500 million, or %7 of the word’s population, are spewing %50 of all emissions, whereas, the other %50 from poor countries emit only %7 of total emissions. Chavez gave an example of the U.S., with a population of 300 million, consuming more than 20 million barrels of oil a day, while China, whose population is almost five times greater than that of the U.S., consumes around 5-6 million barrels a day.
This year’s UN Climate Change Summit witnessed massive demonstrations outside the compound where the event was taking place, with thousands of demonstrators taking on the streets of Copenhagen calling for real change to the system. The Danish police have arrested more than 1000 people.
