FARC-ELN Forces Unite Against Alvaro Uribe government
Dec. 18, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Two of the biggest anti-government movements in Colombia announced they are joining forces to increase pressures on the US-backed policies of Alvaro Uribe, the Colombian President.
Colombia’s two main grass-root movements the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN) said they would unite with ‘force and belligerence’ against Uribe government. They denounce Bogotá’s right wing government for following US imperialists’ policies against the people of Colombia and Latin America.
‘We are on our way toward working for unity,’ said the statement signed by the FARC and ELN. "Our only enemy is North American Imperialism and its oligarchic lackeys," read the statement published on the ANNCOL news agency website.
The FARC-ELN movement has over 15,000 fighters stationed in around 20-30 percent of Colombia’s territory, mostly throughout the south-eastern parts of Colombia's 500,000 square kilometers (193,000 square miles) of jungle and in the plains at the base of the Andean mountains.
Colombian officials dismissed the FARC-ELN joint threats to escalate their fights against the government of Alvaro Uribe. Colombian vice-president Francisco Santos said,’ You don't answer terrorists with anything other than force.’ US government considers both movements as terrorist groups.
