Tehran's Medical Reactor is Running Out of Fuel
Dec. 23, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Ali Larijani Iran’s Parliament Speaker in a joint press conference with Arab League Secretary General Amr Mousa in Cairo, told reporters Iran will start enriching uranium to %20 level if the countries that supply the fuel refuse to sell it to Iran.
This announcement comes at the time when US and its allies say they are giving Iran until the end of this year to comply with their demands or face further measures including economic sanctions.
Larijani made the point clear that Iran intends to purchase fuel for Tehran's reactors but if the suppliers do not want to sell it, then Iran would by all means begin its own productions to %20.
Tehran nuclear reactor is a 5mw reactor supplied by the United States before the Islamic Revolution. The reactor is the only facility available in Iran for production of radioisotopes with variety of uses in hospitals and medical centers across the country. Therefore, it is essential for the reactor to keep operating at optimum levels at all times.
Western countries in spite of this have adopted an inflexible approach to issues surrounding Iranian nuclear program. They insist on a one-way confidence building measure from Iran to send most of its low enriched uranium to another country for an uncertain period, but receive the higher enriched uranium at some later times. Iran quickly rejected this flawed proposal and instead offered a step-by-step deal for exchanging nuclear fuels on its own soil as the most logical approach for resolving the impasse.
From a technical point of view, Iranian nuclear engineers and scientists possess the necessary know-how to enrich uranium at %20 level required for Tehran’s reactor within 2 to 3 months.
