More Negotiations Needed: China and Russia Urge
Dec 24, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - The group of 5+1 holding a phone conference Tuesday ended without reaching any conclusive agreement on Iranian nuclear issue. The next meeting is scheduled for mid-January after the holiday breaks.
Meanwhile, Russian and Chinese officials again called for a diplomatic solution to the nuclear case. Western powers continue to insist that a more dramatic approach including economic sanctions against Tehran is needed.
Alexey Borodavkin, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, called for an all out effort to find a political solution to the issue. He said his country takes an active part in international efforts on Iran’s nuclear program within legal frameworks set by the IAEA. ‘We consistently stand for a diplomat settlement to all problems related to Iran's nuclear program,’ Borodavkin said.
Similarly, China voiced support for diplomatic solution to the current impasse over the issue urging all parties involved in these negotiations to continue talks until a diplomatic solution can be reached. ‘All parties should enhance diplomatic efforts and adhere to the right track of negotiations,’ Jiang Yu, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman told reporters.
Both China and Russia are against unilateral actions by the US and its allies and instead support a multilateral approach to important issues of the day. Beijing and Moscow have long been opposed to sanctions against Iran. They see Tehran as a strategic and important partner against Western drive to monopolize and control global affairs.
United States and its allies have adopted an inflexible approach to Iranian nuclear program. They insist on a one-way confidence building measure demanding Iran to send most of its low enriched uranium to another country for uncertain periods and receive higher enriched uranium at some later times. Iran rejected the proposal and offered a counter proposal to exchange nuclear fuel on its own soil in a step-by-step procedure.
Yesterday, head of Iran’s atomic energy agency Ali Akbar Salehi told reporters that the country has the capability to enrich its own uranium at %20 level in a relatively short period, thus the offer to purchase medical uranium was brought forth as a confidence building measure to break the impasse.
