Socialists Defeat Right-Wing Parties In France

Sarkozy’s blind obedience of the United States on important global issues has dealt a major blow to France’s historic role in Europe.

March 15, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - France’s regional polls gave a resounding victory for the opposition party of Socialists against the current president’s centre-right party (UMP) of Nicholas Sarkozy.

Sunday’s elections showed a 53 percent vote for the Socialist sand just 42 percent for the UMP and all right wing parties combined.

The result is blow to Nicholas Sarkozy who would wish another re-election in 2012. Before taking office, Sarkozy promised various social and economic changes. He said he would bring down the unemployment rate to below 5 percent and provide incentives for the vast majority of French population. None of his promises did actualize in a country where people enjoy a high degree of political awareness.

Right now more than 3 million people are unemployed across France raising social tensions to unprecedented levels since the end of World War II. Sarozy has shown to be quite incapable of improving the country’s economic conditions by following in the American footsteps. Also Sarkozy’s blind obedience of the United States on important global issues has dealt a major blow to France’s historic role in Europe.

‘People feel that there is no real debate on the political scene in France, that everything is within an elite and that real matters like unemployment, immigration, and insecurity are not there to be debated.

The second [reason] is that the Socialist party is much ahead of UMP, which is contrary to the presidential election where Sarkozy was leading quite far away from the Socialist candidate,’ Renaud Girard, chief correspondent for the French newspaper Le Figaro explained.

Right-wing European leaders have come to face the limits of their blind pursuit of the United States designs for today's world
