Russia Reassures US of Bushehr Completion

Russia is involved, and this project will be completed, therefore, this nuclear power plant will finally be launched, and it will generate electricity: Lavrov.

March 19, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Foreign Ministers of Russia and the United States met in Moscow yesterday to finalize an arms reduction deal between the two countries.

The deal if implemented could see a reduction in the number of nuclear warheads currently aimed against the other party. But as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Moscow, Russian officials announced their plan to complete the Iranian nuclear power plant at Bushehr as early as this summer.

Perhaps familiar with Russian aesthetics, Clinton wore a grey color woolen type jacket that resembled the popular fashion during the former USSR under the late Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, she tried to convince Russia for support against Iran.

She met with the Russian Foreign Minister and conveyed her concerns over completion of Bushehr by Moscow. ‘If [Iran] reassures the world, or if its behavior is changed because of international sanctions, then they can pursue peaceful, civil nuclear power, but in the absence of these reassurances, we think it would be premature to go forward with any project at this time because we want to send an unequivocal message to the Iranians.’ Reuters reported Clinton as saying.

But the Russian Foreign Minister once again reiterated Moscow’s decision to complete the Bushehr for electricity generations and not nuclear weapons. Lavrov said, ‘Russia is involved, and this project will be completed, therefore, this nuclear power plant will finally be launched, and it will generate electricity.’ Leading experts believe the US is willing to give major incentives incentives to Moscow for supporting crippling economic sanctions against Iran.

The Russian Foreign Minister also argued that the plant is crucial to the IAEA’s monitoring in Iran, to reassure the Iranian nuclear program remains peaceful. On Wednesday, Russia’s Prime Minister Vladmir Putin said his country would complete the Busher this coming summer after repeated delays.

The Obama administration feeling more isolation on the international arena desperately needs Moscow’s support to enact more stringent anti-Iran economic sanctions.
