A South Korean Patrol Ship Sank in the Yellow Sea

All we can say for now is that one of our patrol ships is sinking after it suffered a rupture in its bottom created by an unidentified cause.

March 27, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Early this morning, a South Korean navy patrol ship sank in the Yellow Sea close to the disputed border region. Reports indicate the ship incurred some major damages to its hull, perhaps caused by a torpedo or a sea mine.

North Korea repeatedly warns the South against conducting joint military drills with the US near the disputed region. The US and South Korean militaries held a large drill last month as preparations for an eventual confrontation with North Korea.

Following the incident, South Korean president, Lee Myung-bak held an emergency meeting at an underground bunker in Seoul to discuss the issue and plans to provide rescue for over 100 personnel of the ship still stranded in the sea. Some of the ship’s crew were rescued but still there are some crew missing.  ‘Many of the 104 sailors on the ship jumped into the sea, and there is a fear that there may be some human causalities,’ South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported.

‘All we can say for now is that one of our patrol ships is sinking after it suffered a rupture in its bottom created by an unidentified cause,’ a spokesperson for the country’s military said.

South Korea says it doesn't yet know what has caused the sinking of a navy patrol boat in the Yellow Sea early this morning.
