G-8 Has Agreed to Hold Further Talks With Iran

G-8 ministers agreed to remain open to dialogue with Iran.

March 30, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Once again the United States and its western allies failed to convince the world of the need to impose sanctions on Tehran.

In the course of a two-day meeting in Ottawa, the eight major industrial nations known as the G-8, issued a final statement calling for further negotiations with Iran over its peaceful domestic nuclear program. But the United States, UK and other western members of the group expressed hope that more economic sanctions were in store for the future against Iran if it does not halt the burgeoning nuclear program immediately.

Without providing any concrete proofs, Washington says Iran is working on nuclear weapons. Tehran, however says the program is designed for generation of electricity and scientific purposes.

In the G-8 meeting a final communiqué said, ‘Ministers agreed to remain open to dialogue and also reaffirmed the need for the international community to take appropriate and strong steps to demonstrate ... resolve to uphold the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.’

Iran is halfway through higher enrichment (20 percent) since it began the process nearly two months ago. Iranian nuclear scientists say the higher enrichment process is progressing extremely well and soon the country's atomic energy plants would supply required nuclear fuel for Tehran’s medical reactor.

In the mean time, Washington showed optimism over China’s future agreement to go ahead with punitive economic measures against Tehran. The Outspoken US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton dismissed talks of Beijing’s disagreements on sanctions against Iran. She said, ‘China is part of the consultative group that has been unified all along the way, which has made it very clear that a nuclear-armed Iran is not acceptable to the international community.’

Clinton’s comment comes at a time when the US and China are close to a full- scale trade-war, which could spell disaster for an already depressed global economy. The United Stated is seeking to label China as a currency manipulator charging that a low Chinese currency is taking away any roles for US manufactured products in the global markets.
