Kyrgyz Interim Government Seeking a trial for Former President

The Kyrgyz episode is another setback for Washington, which had tried hard to control energy resources of the region by blocking constructive cooperation amongst Russia, China, Iran and the regional countries.

Tehran, April 04, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Kyrgyz interim government said the former president must stand trial for ordering a bloodshed during the anti-government demonstrations that shook the Central Asian republic last week.

The leader of the interim government Roza Otunbayeva said the former right-wing president Kurmanbek Bakiyev has exceeded his presidential limits by ordering troops to shoot at demonstrators on the streets. ‘Bakiyev has exceeded the limits of his immunity by spilling blood and now must be brought to trial and answer before the law,’ said the interim leader.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev  was staunch supporter of US policies in the region and did his outmost to facilitate Western influence in a strategic neighborhood that borders Russia, China and Iran. Bakiyev came into power after a so-called tulip revolution in Kyrgyzstan. Receiving much supports from the former Bush administration, Bakiyev promised a new era of peace and prosperity for the country. But after many years in office, just like in Ukraine, the country of nearly six million inhabitants continues to suffer from economic problems and rampant corruptions at all levels.

Bakiyev says he is willing to step down as the president of the country if his safety is guaranteed and that he could be able to travel out and reside in another country. But the interim leader Roza Otunbayeva warned him that the story is not over yet.  Speaking to reporters Otunbayeva said, ‘basically we’re trying to put pressure on him so that he feels cornered.’ She added, ‘ Bakiyev’s responses weren’t quite adequate and if he was in our hands we’d definitely put him on trial.’
