Government Troops, Demonstrators Clash in Bangkok

Red Shirt Protestors warn of the danger of a full-fledged civil war if Abhisit continues to remain in power.

May 16, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - In Thailand the capital city Bangkok was a scene of more clashes between red shirt supporters of Taksin Shinawatra, former prime minister of Thailand, and government troops in the last two days.

Over 24 more people have been killed and 200 wounded during this time. Thailand’s prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva ordered troops to use live ammunition against red shirts following months of standoff.

Demonstrators continue to hold rallies in central parts of Bangkok while armed troops try to disperse young supporters of the ousted prime minister. Abhisit Vejjajiva, speaking live on television, said his government would not back down under current circumstances.

He promised to restore normalcy in Bangkok where many businesses have been hurt by protracted clashes. So far 50 people have been killed and 1600 others injured since protests began on March 12, 2010.

Many red shirt protestors now use Molotov Cocktails to set cars and buses on fire in an attempt to barricade their area against government troops. Some protesters say there exist the danger of a full-fledged civil war if Abhisit continues to remain in power.
