US Continue to Speak of Sanctions

It’s still not clear what makes the US government believe economic sanction against Iran is going to work.

May 18, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Today following a UN Security Council meeting US Secretary of State expressed her usual diatribes regarding sanctions against Iran directly challenging yesterday’s historic nuclear swap agreement among Iran, Turkey and Brazil.

Hillary Clinton said Security Council members have come up with a sanction regime against Iran and they would send their draft resolution to the entire council on Tuesday. This sudden announcement contradicts what Russia and China hailed as a major breakthrough when Iran’s nuclear swap deal was signed.

In her comments on Tuesday, Hillary Clinton downplayed the nuclear swap deal saying Iran was just trying to ease pressure by signing the agreement. Clinton’s comment seems strange for it was the United States itself all along asking to a nuclear swap deal with Tehran when Iran started higher uranium enrichment process.

‘While we acknowledge the sincere efforts of both Turkey and Brazil to find a solution regarding Iran's standoff with the international community over its nuclear program, we are proceeding to rally the international community on behalf of a strong sanctions resolution that will in our view send an unmistakable message about what is expected from Iran,’ she told reporters.

It’s still not clear what makes the US government believe economic sanction against Iran is going to work. Almost leading analysts say such threat will be ineffective and US must consider only serious negotiations with Tehran.
