Former Apartheid South Africa and Israel in Nuclear Weapons Swap Deal

Shimon Peres offered P.W. Botha three different types of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical and conventional.

May 24, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - As the UN nuclear conference this week is discussing non-proliferation issue in the Middle East, new revelation surfaced that the Israeli regime was involved in illegal nuclear weapon dealings with former apartheid regime of South Africa during the 70’s.

Former racist regime’s then defense minister P.W. Botha met Israeli counterpart on several occasions in order to seal nuclear weapons swap between the two, as reported by UK’s Guardian.

Shimon Peres offered P.W. Botha three different types of weapons of mass destruction including nuclear, chemical and conventional. Peres also had asked South African apartheid regime to conceal the deal and maintain its secrecy.

The loathsome regime of South Africa was to use these weapons against other states, according to researcher Sasha Polakow-Suransky who conducted a study of the secret nuclear relationship between these two states. Israel has been on the receiving end of financial, military and political supports from the United States since 1940’s.

It’s not yet clear if United States government had any advance knowledge of nuclear relationship between Israel and South Africa. Such blatant undermining of international regulations by Washington-supported Israeli regime is certain to raise tensions during the non-proliferations summit in New York this week.

At the UN summit, United States is trying hard to hide its own illegal shipment of weapon-grade nuclear materials to Israel. Washington is currently acting the role of a law-abiding, exemplary member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty in front of other members at the United Nations and continues to support the regime in Tel-Aviv.
