Saudi Arabia to Allow Israeli Use of Airspace: US Defense Official

The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way: US Defense Official.

Tehran, June 12, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - United States said its ally Saudi Arabia has agreed to allow its airspace for possible aerial strike against Iran by Israel.

The latest threat follows a UNSC resolution against Iran passed last Wednesday in which certain sector of Iranian military and personnel would be banned from travel abroad and their bank accounts frozen. The report by Sunday Times revealed a US defense official on condition of anonymity saying overflight right was given by Saudi authorities for an attack on Iranian nuclear sites.

‘The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way, they have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren't scrambled and no one gets shot down. This has all been done with the agreement of the [US] State Department,’ the US official said.

United States and its smaller ally Israel have been threatening to use force against the Iranian nuclear program. But many analysts believe given Iran’s military power many of its neighbors should be weary of possible Iranian retaliations if they happen to cooperate with the country’s enemies during a military confrontation.

Iran possesses enormous capacities to close down the world's main energy lifeline, the Straight of Hormuz, for long periods. Even the closure of the Hormuz Straight for short periods could potentially devastate global economy.
