Cuba Urges Israel to Lift Gaza Blockade

The international community must not remain indifferent to the plight of people in Gaza: Cuban Ambassador to the UN, Rodolfo Benitez.

July 23, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Cuban ambassador to the United Nations Rodolfo Benitez, demanded an unconditional and immediate lift of Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza Strip during a UN session ‘The situation on the Middle East,’ on Thursday.

The ambassador urged Israel to allow free circulation of provision to and from Gaza and unhindered humanitarian access to the besieged region. Benitez said ‘ the international community must not remain indifferent to people's plight in Gaza.’ According to the Cuban UN ambassador Israeli illegal occupation of Palestinian lands remains the primary obstacle towards a just peace in the Middle East.

Israel continues to impose a full blockade on Gaza with financial-military backings of the United States. Analysts believe Israel by itself lacks the capability to maintain its hold on Gaza with respect to the situation on the ground.

Cuba, was one the first countries to condemn Israel’s May 31 commando attack on sleeping people onboard the humanitarian flotilla on international waters, where 9 Turkish activists lost their lives. Habana, has also been calling for an impartial investigation into the flotilla attack under the UN.
