Koreans Living in Sakhalin Demand Compensation From Japan

The issue of paying reparation for the damage done to the Koreans in Sakhalin is a historical task to be fulfilled by the Japanese government in a responsible manner: Chairman of 'For the Restoration of Justice' Minju Joson.

July 23, 2010 (Hamsayeh.net) -  Koreans in Sakhalin who suffered by the Japanese Imperial Army's atrocities committed during the Second World War demand compensation, Korea’s Central News Agency KCNA reported on Thursday.

The report says organizers of a Korean social organization in Sakhalin held a recent seminar condemning once again Japanese crimes against humanity, particularly the Koreans living in Sakhalin during WWII.

By the end of the war as of August 1945, there were more than 40,000 Koreans lived in Sakhalin which was under Japanese occupation at that time. Many of the Koreans were forced to work for the Imperial Japanese Army and upon their withdrawal from the Sakhalin withheld Korean workers’ wages. Many of those workers also forced to work as slaves and now demand due compensations that should be paid to them by Japan.

Following the Japanese defeat and its sudden switch towards the US-led western camp, consecutive Japanese governments have felt a certain level of immunity to brush aside crimes committed by them against Koreans thus ignoring payment of due compensations to the victims.

Chairman of the Korean organization called, ‘For the Restoration of Justice’ Minju Joson explained, ‘ The issue of paying reparation for the damage done to the Koreans in Sakhalin is a historical task to be fulfilled by the Japanese government in a responsible manner as it cropped up due to the Japanese imperialists in the past from every point of view.’

Korea has called on Japan to issue an official apology for crimes committed during the Second World War and compensate the victims and their relatives in a due manner.
