Diego Maradona: I Support Hugo Chavez Until the End

It's an honor to be at his side because he fights for his ideals, for the people, for his country—I am with him until death: Diego Maradona says of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

July 23, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - One of world greatest football players of all time, Argentine’s Diego Maradona during a visit to Venezuela on Thursday praised Hugo Chavez and his Bolivarian ideals aimed at progress for Latin America and beyond.

‘I will support Hugo Chavez and his ideals until the end,’ said Diego Maradona, adding, ‘it's an honor to be at his side because he fights for his ideals, for the people, for his country—I am with him until death.’

In Latina America, there are vast majority of people supporting grassroots movement initiated by progressive leaders including Hugo Chavez, Rafael Correa, Evo Morales and Daniel Ortega who have powerfully resisted United States’ interventions in Latin America.

The Argentine footballer said he also planned to travel to Cuba and visit Cuba’s legendry Leader Fidel Castro in Habana. According to Maradona, for some US officials it is quite upsetting to see a truly global leader, Fidel Castro, so healthy and well. ‘I saw him doing very well on television, very lucid,’ said Maradona, adding that U.S. officials ‘want to see him dead.’

Maradona's visit to Venezuela comes at the time when Caracas is experiencing tense relations with its neighbor Colombia that is the last remaining Latin American country still providing services, including allowing the use its military bases to Washington.
