Iran Announces Start up of Fusion Research Phase

It takes 20 to 30 years before this process can be commercialized but we have to use all the capacity in the country to provide the necessary speed for fusion research: Iran's Nuclear Chief.

Tehran, July 24, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iran’s Head of Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi, this morning announced the launch of a new nuclear research phase in the field of fusion technology.

The country has been conducting sporadic small-scale research on this field before, but today’s announcement allows a dedicated team of no less than 50 scientists to conduct studies as to the practical uses of this important science.

The process of nuclear fusion involves lighter atomic particles such as hydrogen atoms merging into heavier particle which then releases a significant amount of energy. ‘It takes 20 to 30 years before this process can be commercialized but we have to use all the capacity in the country to provide the necessary speed for fusion research,’ Iranian Student news Agency (ISNA) quoted Salehi as saying.

Iran's announcement of beginning research in nuclear fusion follows country’s other important projects including design and construction of a 40 megawatts nuclear reactor to replace the aging Tehran’s 5 megawatts US-supplied reactor currently in use for radioisotope production.

Some western countries, particularly the United States and its allies hope that through aggressive diplomatic maneuvering, Iran would eventually abandon its burgeoning domestic nuclear program altogether. But Iranian officials representing all Iranians on this particular issue have made it abundantly clear that the country has no intention of halting the nuclear program as it has already reached a state known as the ‘point of no return’.
