The Number of Israeli Visitors to Turkey Plunged by 90 Percent

The flotilla attack caused widespread anger at Israelis across Turkey where many local restaurant owners and businesses displayed signs that read Israeli tourists are not welcomed.

August 06, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Turkey’s share of Israeli tourists declined by more than 90 percent in the month of June following Israel’s cowardly raid on a Turkish humanitarian aid flotilla last May.

The early morning raid by Israeli commandos against half asleep and unarmed humanitarian activists killed 9 Turkish citizens. Turkey has been receiving a relatively large number of tourists from Israel in recent years but in June Israeli tourists visiting Turkey plunged by 90 percent that is only 2,605 visitors in total.

In June 2009, over 27,289 Israeli tourists visited Turkey, the country’s tourism ministry said. The flotilla attack caused widespread anger at Israelis across Turkey where many local restaurant owners and businesses displayed signs that read Israeli tourists are not welcomed.

Turkish people and the government have been criticizing Israeli atrocities against Palestinians since the Israeli raid on Gaza in 2008. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan blasted Israeli officials of committing genocide in Gaza and the Israelis retaliated by attacking the Turkish vessel Mavi Marmarra as hostilities grew.

Globally speaking, many Israeli tourists that show support for the current Zionist establishment in the Palestinian occupied territories are not welcomed in many parts of the world including countries of Latin America, Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Central Asia.
