South Korea will be shooting itself in the foot if it follows the US in applying stricter sanctions on Iran: says Iranian official in South Korea. August 08, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iranian ambassador to South Korea said Seoul should refrain from following United States’ pressures to join a rather symbolic sanction against Iran. The ambassador Mohammad Reza Bakhtiari in an interview with South Korean local newspaper Joong Ang Ilbo on Saturday warned those countries that decide to join an ill-advised embargo on Iran. He particularly mentioned South Korean trades with Iran of nearly $10 billion in 2010. The trades could undergo major transformations if Seoul were to follow Washington's illegal moves against Iran and the international community. Bakhtiari said South Korea will be shooting itself in the foot if it follows the US in applying stricter sanctions on Iran. ‘If restrictions are going to be taken by the other party, we are not going to sit idle,’ he said, adding, ‘whoever is exerting or applying any sanction on Iran, first of all they are depriving themselves of good potential business opportunity and the huge Iranian market that exists there and is open to everybody to enjoy the benefits of it.’ Iran is one of South Korea’s largest oil suppliers and also a relatively large market for South Korean manufactured industrial goods in the Middle East. The current administration of Lee Myung-Bak has shown to have the tendency of being influenced by Washington's own policies, which often times run contrary to regional peace and security for all Koreans. The current administration’s steadfast antagonism towards their North Korean brethrens on behalf of US-led Western corporations is a point in case. |
