Iran Criticizes IAEA Double-Standard Approach

The IAEA has allowed some countries to possess nuclear weapons and has told the other countries not to seek a nuclear weapon: Iran's Atomic Chief.

Tehran 28, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iran’s atomic program is experiencing a dramatic progress following the launch of Bushehr nuclear reactor last week. On Wednesday, the Head of Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi announced a new program of untapped uranium deposit exploration across the country.

Iran's uranium deposits can be found in Yazd, Kerman and Hormozgan provinces, but so far only a third of the country has been explored for uranium and experts believe there are sufficient amounts of uranium still to be found in other regions.  ‘Previously, approximately a third of the country had been explored for uranium. But now, with the ample budget that the administration has committed to the organization (the AEOI), all of the country has been surveyed and some very promising veins of uranium have been discovered,’ said Ali Akbar Salehi during a press conference in Tehran on Wednesday.

Meanwhile Iranian and Russian experts are busy completing installation of 163 fuel rods inside the core of Bushehr reactors. It is expected that the process will take another week before the reactor is ready for a start up. Once all the fuel rods have been installed, it would take two to three months for Bushehr to generate electricity.

Also this morning, Iran’s atomic chief criticized the ongoing double-standard policies of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) toward member states. Salehi said the IAEA seems trying to maintain its controversial policies with respect to signatories. According to Salehi the IAEA has divided members into two separate groups namely the ones that possess nuclear bombs and those that do not.

‘One group is the countries that possess nuclear weapons -- China, Russia, the United States, France, and Britain -- which are the permanent members of the Security Council. The IAEA has allowed these countries to possess nuclear weapons and has told the other countries not to seek a nuclear weapon.’ Fars News Agency quoted Salehi as saying.

Indeed for so long, the IAEA has kept an obedient posture toward major nuclear weapon states, while against non-nuclear weapon states tries to overdo a role as the nuclear watchdog. Moreover, the IAEA seems quite helpless over Israel’s illegal nuclear program believed to even possess hundreds of nuclear weapons.
