General Strikes Paralyze France

Strikers stand against government's pension reforms that would  reduce the already stretched middle class even further into poverty like what’s now happening in Greece.

September 08, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - France remains paralyzed by nationwide strikes against government pension reforms targeting elderly and poor in a move that seeks to reduce and eventually dismantle the century old social security system.

On Tuesday across major cities in France, transportation and public services workers have commenced their strikes expected to surpass the last mass strikes with more than 2 million protestors and main trade unions.

The right-wing government of Nicholas Sarkozy like other European Union members is introducing a stringent austerity measure to reduce government deficit. This will in turn reduce the already stretched middle class even further into poverty like what’s now happening in Greece. Yesterday, more than 25 percent of all flights have been cancelled due to general strike by air traffic controllers.

Most French citizens support the strike and promised to hold huge demonstrations in the coming days. During demonstrations last year, angry protestors burned thousands of automobiles and businesses to vent their dissatisfactions with ongoing economic crises including unemployment, inflation and poverty in France.

In all about 60 percent of French teachers, 24 percent of post office workers have joined the ranks of other union workers for a general strike on Tuesday.
