More Demonstrations Planned Against Austerity Program in Greece

Prior to US invasion of Iraq, Greece was among a growing number of countries that had adopted US neocon version of economic model based on borrowing unlimited amounts of money.

September 12, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Mass protests in Greece are expected to continue across major cities as government of George Papandreou insists on going ahead with its stringent austerity measures and tax increases targeting the country’s middle class and low-income earners.

In the city of Thessaloniki, thousands of protestors gathered in front of city’s annual international fair, where Papandreou took the podium, to voice their anger at growing poverty and unemployment. In his speech, Papandreou insisted, ‘I lead this battle without thinking of the political cost. It is a battle for the survival of Greece. Either we fight it all together, or we sink.’

Most average income Greeks however feel the government is protecting the rich people while it’s placing too much burden on ordinary people. In fact what the administration is doing is an exact replica of what its US counterpart is doing in the United States at the time of economic hardship, that amounts to cutting off public services, raising taxes, eliminating social safety coverage while providing cash incentives to the wealthy. Such a strategy hopes to boost confidence in the western financial system as the ultimate remedy to combat economic stagnation.

Meanwhile, main trade unions promised to continue protests in the coming weeks and months against government’s tough reforms. Prior to US invasion of Iraq, Greece was among a growing number of countries that had adopted US neocon version of economic model based on borrowing unlimited amounts of money simply to portray economic vibrancy to the outside world - an economic vibrancy, which solely counted on a never ending yet exponentially increasing supply of oil to global consumers. Following the bubble’s burst in 2008 Greece alongside many other US followers fell into a deep economic crisis unprecedented since the Great Depression in 1929.
