Russia Says There's No Need For NATO to be Overly Active in the Arctic

We do not see what benefit NATO can bring to the Arctic...I do not think NATO would be acting properly if it took upon itself the right to decide who should solve problems in the Arctic: Sergei Lavrov.

September 18, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says presence of NATO forces in the Arctic would not needed, as it would lead to unnecessary lawlessness in that region.

‘We do not see what benefit NATO can bring to the Arctic...I do not think NATO would be acting properly if it took upon itself the right to decide who should solve problems in the Arctic,’ said Lavrov at a meeting with Canadian FM Lawrence Cannon on Thursday, as reported by Ria Novosti.

Canada has been sending various expeditionary teams to study the region for potential oil, a move reciprocated by Russia’s own team to seek for untapped riches in the Arctic. The very clean and environmentally delicate region might now witness an ongoing commercial competition among several countries that border the Arctic.

There continue to be disagreements over demarcation issues with each country reserving a right to use over 200 – nautical mile exclusive economic zone for itself. Once the countries agree on their own exclusive economic zones, exploration and extraction of oil and other resources could take place.

The North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) has been expanding its presence around vast Russian territory since the end of Cold War. Russia is now effectively surrounded by US-led NATO military bases in every part of its borders in Europe, the Black Sea, Middle East, Central Asia, Asia, Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.

The Arctic region is now a commercial battleground amongst countries bordering it.
