A Recent Cyber Attack May Have Targeted Iran's Industrial Control System

Stuxnet Trojan worm, is a working and fearsome prototype of a cyber-weapon that will lead to the creation of a new arms race in the world: Specialist.

September 25, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) – A new cyber worm called Stuxnet was the latest cyber attack on computers worldwide. Experts however believe the main target of this latest cyber attack was Iran since so many computers were infected in Iran.

The Stuxnet Trojan worm was calculated to take control of industrial systems designed by Siemen’s AG Company. The German company specializes in major industrial projects including nuclear power plants, water systems etc. Once the worm infects a system it then starts communications with a remote server by sending secret data stored inside the infected computer and eventually take control of the whole system.

Of all computers infected worldwide, over 60 percent were found to be in Iran prompting speculations that it may have been the main target of this cyber attack.

A computer Trojan worm like the Stuxnet after infecting a system, automatically sets up communications with a remote server, which is used to steal secret data and ultimately control the system.

Specialists at Kaspersky Labs said the attack could only be conducted with supports from another state. ‘Stuxnet is a working and fearsome prototype of a cyber-weapon that will lead to the creation of a new arms race in the world,’ Al Jazeera reported a statement issued by Kaspersky Labs.
