Police Protest Turned Violent: State of Emergency Declared in Ecuador

  

Police protest turned ugly forcing the President to take refuge at a nearby hospital. Riot police and army troops used tear gas to disperse protestors.

September 30, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - A few hours ago a coup attempt took place in Ecuador against the incumbent President Rafael Correa. On Thursday afternoon, Rafael Correa was addressing some 1000 police officers that had gone on strike to protest a decision by Parliament to reduce part of their privileges.

Striking police officers vent their anger at Correa for his decision to reduce their salaries. Police protest turned ugly forcing the President to take refuge at a nearby hospital. Riot police and army troops used tear gas to disperse protestors.  

A state of chaos ensued after officers began violent demonstrations, looting supermarkets and burning tires on the streets in Quito. Ecuadorian army quickly took control of the situation and said it would remain loyal to the president.
