French Strikers Press On With Their Demands

Nicholas Sarkozy announced his government would crack down on violent protesters to guarantee public order. He labeled Strikers, students and pensioners as ‘troublemakers’ seeking to create chaos.

October 20, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Thousands of French workers and students clashed with riot police in Paris and other major cities across the country, yesterday. Protesters are demanding a halt to a proposed austerity program by Sarkozy administration to cut pensions and impose greater tax burdens on working people but at the same time leave the newly formed aristocracy intact.

Sarkozy said his government is determined to go ahead with planned measures despite ongoing protests. Oil, transportation sectors workers have staged total strikes since last week thus bringing the country’s motorists to face shortages. Nearly 10 percent of France’s gas stations are running dry on gasoline at this time.

Nicholas Sarkozy announced his government would crack down on violent protesters to guarantee public order. He labeled Strikers, students and pensioners as ‘troublemakers’ seeking to create chaos. But a vast majority of French citizens stand united against the right-wing government austerity program with legitimate concern of their own. They don’t see any need to increase the retirement age from 60 to 62 for people who are already struggling with bare minimums living in a stagnated economy rife with inflation.

Consecutive French governments, notably the current Sarkozy administration, have been steadfast followers of US’ neocon financial strategy since the illegal invasion of Iraq. At the core of necon’s financial strategy lies an unlimited potential for borrowing and ballooning state deficit as the best way toward economic prosperity. Of course all of that relies on how much oil is injected into global economy to help sustain a fiat currency regime advocated by US Federal Reserves and other major European banks. The existing system couldn’t really care less about the plight of strikers, students, pensioners and unemployed in France and all other western industrial economies.

On Tuesday, major clashed were reported from Paris suburb of Nanterre with students and others throwing stones at police. Over 1000 gas stations reported closed due to strikes. ‘There are people who want to work, the immense majority, and they cannot be deprived of petrol,’ Sarkozy insisted.

France is home to French Revolution (1789-1799). The majority of population is educated as well as quite sensitive over how their elected governments interact with people.

Both sides seem to be really digging their heels in. [President] Sarkozy wants people to know he’s not giving into pressure from the street.
