Iran isn't Waiting For Permission to Continue With its Peaceful N. Program
Tehran, Dec. 19, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iranian top nuclear official urges Western powers to take advantage of Iran’s generous nuclear fuel swap offer.
Iran’s Head of Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi told reporters Friday that Iran has every right to enrich uranium for as much as need be and it is not waiting to get permission to enrich %20 uranium for use in Tehran reactor – the country’s main facility that produces all the medical radioisotopes.
Tehran proposed a confidence building first step nuclear fuel swap offer to exchange 400 kg of its own low enriched uranium for higher enriched uranium on Kish - a small island in the Persian Gulf.
The Obama administration quickly dismissed Iran’s offer and instead kept an inflexible approach to any such cooperation. Washington wants Iran send most of its safely stored enriched uranium to another country for an unlimited period of time and if all goes well, Tehran may receive higher enriched uranium for its 5 MW nuclear reactor. Western countries threatened Iran if it doesn’t accept the deal, severest of economic sanctions will certainly follow.
Iran’s nuclear chief however rejected Western decision to set a deadline for Iran when he said, ‘Iran is a sovereign and independent state, and Western countries are well aware that they cannot set a deadline for a sovereign state.’
