Attacks Kill Canadian and US Military Personnel in Afghanistan

Deadly IED Bombing Destroy Canadian Military Vehicle in Kandahar Province

Kabul, Dec. 31, 09 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Taliban fighters launched devastating suicide bomb attacks on US and Canadian troops in Afghanistan.

In their first attack a suicide bomber entered a US military base in a highly dangerous area in Khost Province south of the country. Yesterday’s blast killed 8 American private contractors working for the CIA.

There are now tens of thousands of American private contractors active inside Afghanistan doing various tasks for the US military. The blast at base Chapman was the deadliest suicide bombing since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. The bomber somehow managed to enter the high security compound without being noticed and detonated his explosives inside the base.

A few hours later, in the south-eastern province of Kandahar, another devastating IED incident blew up a Canadian vehicle killing 4 soldiers and a well-known reporter Michelle Lang 34 from Calgary Herald. It was Ms. Lang’s first assignment to the war-torn country.

Two days ago, a coalition air strike on a remote village in southern Afghanistan killed over 10 school children. Earlier Taliban commanders announced that they would increase the number of fighters in reaction to troop surge announcement made by the US military. On Wednesday, a top NATO official warned that coalition forces have only a year to complete their mission in Afghanistan and going beyond that time frame should enable the Taliban to defeat the coalition forces.

Military experts believe that because of Taliban’s use of makeshift IED bombs against military vehicles, the US and NATO troops in Afghanistan must almost always stay very near their military bases and not venture too far off from designated areas. They consider this factor as one of the reasons why US and NATO troops could never win the war in Afghanistan since they cannot cover any grounds in a country the size of Afghanistan.
