China Rejects Western Calls For Sanctions Against Tehran

US and Allies' Plans on Further Sanctions Against Iran are Postponed

Jan, 06, 10 (Hamsayeh.Net) - China’s UN ambassador dashed United States and allies’ hopes of implementing a fourth round of sanctions against Iran in the near future. The ambassador Zhang Yesui said ‘more time and patience would be required at this time’.  ‘This is not the right time or right moment for sanctions because the diplomatic efforts are still going on.’

Yesui speaking at the UN said, representatives from China, Russia, the United States, Germany, UK and France would meet later in January to continue talks on Iran’s nuclear activities, therefore, it’s not necessary to rush into actions on that issue. ‘The efforts aimed at diplomatic negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue still need some time and patience, trying to bridge differences and finding a settlement through diplomatic efforts -- there's still space for such efforts.’ Reuters quoted the China’s UN ambassador as saying through a translator.

The United States and allies placed high hopes on Russia and China to follow western media misinformation campaigns against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program. Washington was confident of forming a so-called united international front against Tehran’s legitimate nuclear program by seeking to implement crippling economic sanctions immediately after the end of the New Year holidays.  But both Moscow and Beijing, citing no evidence of any diversions of nuclear activities, saw no need to rush into conclusions as some western countries normally do.

A western diplomat speaking on the condition of anonymity, told reporters that after the Chinese ambassador’s speech at the UN, it would be impossible to hammer out a new sanctions resolution against Iran for at least the first two months of 2010.

Iran has already dismissed passing of a new sanctions resolution as another futile act on the part of the US and its allies that have been tried before and that have helped make the country stronger than ever.
