Iranian And Iraqi FM's Meet in Baghdad

Iraq and Iran Have Agreed to Arrange a Commission to Resolve the Border Issues

Baghdad, Jan. 07, 10 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Iranian and Iraqi top officials met today in Baghdad to discuss issues of mutual interests between the two historical neighbors.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki was in Baghdad today with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari, in a meeting that further stressed cordial relationships between the two countries.

Mottaki and Zibari agreed to hold an arbitration commission to workout outstanding issues with respect to border demarcations between the two countries that have been long overdue since the end of the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's initiated war against Iran. ‘There will be a meeting within a week between the two countries about the borders,’ Mottaki told to reporters after the meeting.

All along Iran and Iraq border regions there are enormous underground oil and gas reserves some of which are located exactly on the borderline dividing the two territories. For instance, the Fakkeh oil field is placed close to the border and has the potential of becoming a joint project for development by both countries.

Other fields include Paydar, Paydar-Gharb, Naftshahr, Azar, dehloran and Azadegan fall in the same category. Iraqi and Iranian oil officials have already agreed to jointly develop the fields in near future. ‘The border forces of the two countries returned to their places and after the meetings of the technical committees ... everything will revert back to normal,’ the Iranian Foreign Minister said.
