China to Attend 5+1 Talks in New York

Relevant parties can continue seeking a diplomatic resolution, and demonstrate flexibility: Chinese FM Official

Jan.15, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - China plans to send a lower ranking government official to attend the 5+1 talks on Iran’s nuclear dossier in New York on Saturday, Reuters quoted the U.S. State Department as saying, yesterday.

The talks are scheduled in New York tomorrow but US and its Western allies seem to be dismayed at Beijing’s non-urgent approach on the issue. Initially they expected participation at higher levels of Foreign Ministry directors for the talks. China’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying, ‘Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei will not be able to attend because of scheduling issues, in the current circumstances, we hope that the relevant parties can continue seeking a diplomatic resolution, and demonstrate flexibility.’

The United States, UK, French and German officials have been trying hard to convince Russia and China for the need to look at the Iranian nuclear program as the most pressing issue in the global arena. They have been basing their argument on some fictitious allegations usually made by Western media over the subject since 2003 when the Iranian nuclear program drew widespread international attention.

‘We are aware that their representation will be below the level of political director, but it will be a useful meeting to have regardless of the Chinese representation.’ State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters and added, ‘…the United States will continue to work with China and other countries to convince them that the urgency of the situation requires not only additional engagement, which China does support, but additional pressure, which obviously China is still working through.’

Iran an oil rich country in the Middle East is an outstanding member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The Iranian government has always maintained that it seeks to advance its nuclear program for peaceful scientific purposes including electricity generation.
