5+1 Meeting Ended Without Conclusive Agreement

China Attended the Meeting at least Possible Level of Participation

New York, Jan. 17, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) – Group of 5+1 countries’ meeting to discuss Iran’s peaceful nuclear program in New York ended without reaching any conclusive agreement as expected.

China attended the meeting by sending its ambassador’s advisor to the UN in what could be its least possible participation in such a meeting, which according to Western media hoopla is considered to be a matter of global consequence and a danger to all countries of the world.

It shows that Beijing and to some extend Moscow do not see the sheer urgency of the Iranian nuclear issue as some Western countries would wish to portray. ‘We had a very sober assessment, it is inconclusive in the sense that we did not make any decisions right away,’ AFP reported Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying.

The group of 5+1 comprises of China, Russia, Germany, France, UK and the United States. Western countries led by the United States’ high-ranking representative expected to convince Moscow and Beijing for greater sanctions against the oil rich Middle Eastern country. But the duo downplayed the urgency of the Iranian nuclear issue and thus signalled their reluctance to back such measures.

Washington and its allies allege that Iran is building nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian program. They mainly base their allegations on some periodically concocted fictional stories that come from various sources within the western media outlets. Despite extensive campaigns by the Western media, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has never found any diversion related to the Iranian nuclear program after its numerous inspections.

Tehran has always maintained that its domestic nuclear program is designed for peaceful purposes and as a signatory to the NPT, has all the rights to continue the nuclear program.
