Russia Would Send Ambassador Back to Ukraine

Yushchenko’s much trumpeted Western-Backed economic prosperity turned out to be a big scam that never materialized.

January 20, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Russia is sending its ambassador Mikhail Zurabov back to Ukraine where the incumbent President Viktor Yushchenko failed in his re-election bid on Sunday’s voting.

Ukrainians once supportive of Yushchenko’s maverick attitudes towards its historic eastern neighbour, Russia, gave him a humiliating fifth-place finish. Two pro-Russian candidates Viktor Yanukovich and Yulia Tymoshenko, would have to compete in the final round on February 7th.

Yesterday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said he plans to send an ambassador to Ukraine now that Yushchenko steps down as the country’s most pro-Western president. ‘I think you should begin your duties as ambassador to Ukraine and try to do the most to strengthen the friendly character of our countries' relations,’ Medvedev told Mikhail Zurabov as reported by Russian news agencies.

‘I hope the tallying of the final results in Ukraine will lead to a capable, effective government, oriented on the development of constructive, friendly and multi-dimensional relations with Russia,’ He added.

Western supported, Victor Yushchenko came into power through his campaign known as the ‘Orange Revolution’ in 2004. He immediately set upon building stronger relations with Western countries including a membership bid into the NATO military alliance and cutting down economic relations with Moscow. Yushchenko tried hard to blame the former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin for genocide against Ukrainians during the Second World War.

Yushchenko’s much trumpeted Western-backed economic prosperity turned out to be a big scam that never materialized. Ukraine today suffers from a deep economic crisis with no help in sight from the main champions of the free market economy i.e. the United States and certain of its allies.

Russian Foreign Minister welcomed the new developments in Ukraine saying, ‘Regarding the prospects of Russian-Ukrainian relations, we have always been against approaches that are politicised, artificial and have nothing in common with the interests of the Ukrainian people.’  And added, ‘We hope the new president, whose name we will most likely find out on February 7, will fully understand the need to build relations in this manner and not hold them hostage to his or her ambitions.’
