Former Canadian Ambassador Served As a CIA Agent

Kenneth Taylor Reported Directly to His CIA Boss

January 24, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Canada’s Former ambassador to Iran, Kenneth Taylor, served as a spy for his bosses from the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), as revealed by Canada’s leading daily The Globe and Mail on Saturday.

The report said following an arrangement between then-US President Jimmy Carter and Canadian Prime Minister Joe Clark, Taylor was appointed the CIA’s point man in Tehran, reporting directly to that office. More details on Taylor’s services to another state south of Canada’s border are explained in a new book called Our Man in Tehran written by Trent University historian Robert Wright.

Based on Wright’s revelations, information sent out by Taylor, were seen only by two Canadian officials namely the director Louis Delvoie of the External Affairs, and Pat Black who was the assistant undersecretary for security and intelligence. However, most of Taylor’s information was sent directly to the CIA.

Kenneth Taylor was the Canadian ambassador to Iran from 1977 to 1980 during the Islamic Revolution. One of Taylor’s responsibilities involved providing preliminary information that led to a failed US’ attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran. Canadian Embassy also helped 6 of the hostages by providing them false Canadian passports, which facilitated their departures from Tehran. Iranian revolutionary students took 60 Americans at the US Embassy in Tehran for 444 days.

The students as well as thousands of other pages of documents showed that Americans were involved in massive espionage activities against Iran at that time. Iranian students later changed the named of the former US Embassy into ‘The Nest of Spies’ and the place is being referred to by that very title ever since. Taylor himself told the Globe and Mail, he was feeling confident about his CIA mission since Iran was experiencing widespread chaos from after the 1979 Revolution.

The former Canadian ambassador, after rescuing the 6 Americans, soon closed the Canadian Embassy in Tehran and left the country with his wife and staff.
