US is Waging Online Warfare

We're afraid that in the eyes of American politicians, only information controlled by America is free information

January 25, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - China’s leading daily newspaper in an editorial by Wang Xiaoyang, slammed US officials’ recent remarks about cyberspace freedom and said America was behind social media outlets like Twitter and YouTube to generate unrest in other countries particularly in Iran.

People's Daily said, ‘Behind what America calls free speech is naked political scheming. How did the unrest after the Iranian elections come about?

It was because online warfare launched by America, via YouTube video and Twitter microblogging, spread rumours, created splits, stirred up, and sowed discord between the followers of conservative reformist factions.’

Last week US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton strongly criticized governmental controls over Internet contents in countries like China and Iran. She reiterated Washington’s support for individuals and companies to spread Western democratic values across the globe.

Both China and Iran have blocked access to media outlets such as YouTube and Twitter from their local Internet networks since last July. The People’s Daily asked, if US officials would allow activities that promoted terrorism or other obscene information on the Internet in their country?

It said, ‘We're afraid that in the eyes of American politicians, only information controlled by America is free information, only news acknowledged by America is free news, only speech approved by America is free speech, and only information flow that suits American interests is free information flow.’

Earlier the US company Google announced plans to pull out of China citing lack of freedom and sophisticated hacking attacks on its search engine websites. China’s local Internet search engines enjoy massive popularity in that country. The Baidu, a Chinese search engine, currently controls more than 60 percent of China’s market.
