Obama Mentions Iran and N. Korea in His Annual Speech

North Korea and Iran Face Growing Isolation Over Their Nuclear Programs: Obama Warned

January 28, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) -  US officials issued more warnings to Iran of ‘growing consequences’ over its domestic nuclear program.

During his last night’s annual State of the Union speech US President Barack Obama devoted a small part of his speech to Iran’s nuclear program.  A big part of US President’s speech, however concerned the growing economic problems at home. In relation with Iran, Obama said the US aims at an international approach to the nuclear arms proliferation issue and to deal with countries that pursue production of nuclear weapons. The US pioneered building of the first atomic weapons and the only country in the world that has practically used such weapons against other states.

‘That is why the international community is more united, and the Islamic Republic of Iran is more isolated, and as Iran's leaders continue to ignore their obligations, there should be no doubt: they too, will face growing consequences.’ Reuters quoted Obama as saying.

Earlier, the US Secretary of State attending a conference in London about Afghanistan and Yemen on Wednesday told Reuters that a new international consensus toward dealing with the Iranian nuclear program is forming.  Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also attended the conference.

‘In the course of many consultations including today we believe that there is growing understanding in the international community that Iran should face consequences for its defiance of international obligations,’ Clinton told reporters.

The Russian Foreign Minister speaking to reporters said that time was an essence in dealing with Iran’s nuclear program. ‘It is clear that one can't wait forever, and our partners are already talking about the need to discuss further measures in the U.N. Security Council,’ Reuters quoted Lavrov as saying.

Western countries, particularly the United States accuse Tehran of pursuing a nuclear weapons program, a charge Tehran flatly denies.
