Obama Takes Tougher Stance on China Trade

US to Impose More Strict Rules on Trades With China

February 04, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - The Obama administration again unleashed another stern warning to China after a series of similar warnings in recent days, a signal that the US is seriously seeking to challenge China’s growing international influence.

Obama pressured China over a lack of democratic freedom in that country and Beijing’s closed doors to Western goods and products. He said, ‘The approach that we are taking is to try to get much tougher about enforcement of existing rules,’ and demanded that China must remove controls over the Chinese Yuan, making it easier for US manufactured goods to enter that market.

China is the world's third largest economy and with 1.5 billion population has turned into one of America’s and indeed Western world’s greatest foreign policy challenges in modern history. The country’s rapid economic growth and vast manufacturing potentials have knocked Western competitors out of the international market.

The US is also unhappy with China’s independent policies regarding trades and partnership with other state particularly energy rich countries. Moreover, Washington and Western allies hope to maintain control over global energy flow, since that would guarantee a long held hegemony in global trades directly enabling them to impose own terms on other developing states.

China has warned the US over signing separate military contracts with Taiwan, an island, which according to Beijing is an integral part of the main land China. Chinese officials also warned Obama on meeting with Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, calling it an interference in the country’s internal affairs by Washington.

Yet coming as another blow to Obama’s efforts for demonizing Iran over a domestic nuclear program, China rebuffed a US demand to follow through more aggressive policy on Iran by agreeing to additional sanctions. Today, a senior Chinese official once again called for more dialogue between Iran and the international community seeing no need to impose further sanctions.

China’s Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi told reporters during his visit to France that he actually wanted to see more direct talks between Iran and the international community over Tehran's nuclear program. ‘Discussions amongst world powers over imposing possible sanctions on Iran will complicate the situation and might make it harder to find a diplomatic solution,’ Reuters quoted Chinese Foreign Minister as saying.
