Twin Bombings Hit the Holy City of Karbala

Twin Explosions Killed 31 Pilgrims in Karbala, Iraq.

February 05, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Today in the city of Karbala, twin explosions killed at least 31 and wounded over 80 others during a holy religious gathering.

This was the second set of bombings in less than a week in that same city when on Monday a female suicide bomber detonated her explosive device killing 54 shia pilgrims. The city of Karbala is the site of Shia holy mausoleums and has been the target of many bombings so far.

There have been over 7 million visitors from around the world to Karbala in the past seven days. Hundreds of thousands of Shia Muslims poured into Karbala despite repeated government warnings about the dangers. Iraqi government official condemned the attacks.

An Iraqi official, Saad al-Muttalibi blamed the recent blasts on al-Qaeda and former Baathists. ‘These forces are bent on trying to destroy democracy, the achievements of the people of Iraq and the aspirations for peace and rebuilding the country, it is very sad that we see some forces are still backing those murderers in creating a large scale of incidents in which people are killed."’ Al Jazeera quoted him as saying.
