Egypt Nearly Completes the Large Steel Wall Along Gaza

Unknown assailants shot an Egyptian security guard while on duty near the wall.

Gaza, February 08, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Sources inside the Palestinian territory in Gaza say Egyptian workers are hard at work  completing the construction of a steel wall, funded by the US and Israeli lobbies near the border with Gaza Strip. The wall is suppose to permanently cut off Gaza Strip from Egypt.

According to local eyewitnesses more than 45 truckloads of heavy steel pipes arrived at construction area for the remainder of the wall in the last few days. The wall is nearly complete in most parts except a small portion close to Salahuddin axis, the report said.

On Saturday, some unknown assailants shot an Egyptian security guard while on duty near the wall and fled the scene. The guard is now in critical condition with a bullet wound to his back. Palestinian authorities also filed a petition at an Egyptian court in Cairo questioning the legality of the steel barrier along the border, urging an immediate halt to its construction.

Once completed, the wall would be about 10 km long and 30 meters high. Its construction aims at blockading Palestinians in Gaza Strip from importing their basic day-to-day needs from Egypt.
