US Missile Defense Shield in Europe Futile: Think Tank

Russian-U.S. panel says missile shield in Europe ineffective.

February 13, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Russian and US military experts at the EastWest Institute, an independent think tank based in Moscow, say the proposed US patriot missile defense shield to protect Europe from possible Iranian missile is as ineffective as it could possibly be.

The institute reasons that it would take Tehran at least five years to build a supposed nuclear warhead and a delivery system; therefore, ‘The missile threat from Iran to Europe is thus not imminent.’

The experts also explain that Iranian missile capabilities are and will remain somewhat limited since most of its current arsenal consist of rudimentary North Korean missiles, themselves copies of Russian made missile from the 1950s. ‘We believe that these components were likely transferred to North Korea illegally in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Russia was experiencing major political and economic chaos,’ the report stated and published by the Russia’s state news agency Ria Novosti, today.

Moreover, even if Iran was to build a missile to reach Europe, US defense system wouldn’t be able to stop it, since missile interceptors are notorious for being easily fooled by simple countermeasures such as decoys, etc.
