Ukraine's New President Rules Out NATO Membership

Ukraine Set to begin New Course With Russia and the West.

February 14, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Ukraine’s newly elected president Viktor Yanukovich told reporters he would consider prolonging Russia’s naval presence in Sevastopol naval base after 2017.

Yanukovich narrowly won the election last week, but his opponent Yulia Tymoshenko announced she does not recognize the results. It is expected that following Yanukovich’s victory, Ukraine would once again mend historic relations with Russia, badly damaged by former maverick politician Viktor Yushchenko who could not hide his somewhat unreasonable grudges against Russia. Yushchenko’s main idea was to turn Ukraine into the Western sphere of influence through an Orange Revolution immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union. But he failed to implement his plans thus many of his supporters turned against him during the last election.

Yanukovich said he didn’t rule out Russia’s naval presence in the Black Sea port of Sevastopol after 2017 and he will discuss the issue in the future. ‘We will discuss this issue in the near future. This matter will not be decided at Russia's expense, it will be decided in the national interests of Ukraine. We will find a solution,’ Russian state news agency Ria Novosti reported him as saying.

The new president said that he doesn’t see his country joining the NATO as Ukrainian people support Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s proposal for a broad European security program. ‘I think that the initiative of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on the preparation of a new European security concept...is one in which we are willing to participate, ‘ Yanukovych said.
