Leading European States Ask for Removal of US Nuclear Weapons

Five Countries Seek Removal of US Nuclear Weapons From European Soil.

February 20,2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - Five European states want the United States remove its nuclear weapons from European continent. A former NATO official Willy Gales seeks adoption of a new nuclear policy for European nations by asking the US to dismantle its nuclear weapons from the continent.

Only those of the nuclear states in Europe should be allowed to have the weapons in the region. NATO members Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, the Netherlands and Norway are the five European countries that are expected to make an official request with the next few days.

These states argue that all the nuclear arms currently on European soil belonging to other members are removed. Most of the weapons still remaining originate from the age of Cold War between the US and the former Soviet Union.

Three European countries, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany hold an estimated 200 US nuclear bombs on their soils, but most of the weapons are stationed in Italy and Turkey. The United States continues to have thousands of nuclear weapons across the world despite calls for elimination of such weapons throughout the globe.
