NAM Criticizes Amano Over Report

The new chief seems more prone to Western powers’ influence and he is also showing a greater tendency to use redundant technocratic works.

Tehran, March 01, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - The countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), have strongly voiced their frustration with the latest report compiled by the new IAEA chief Yukiya Amano.

In Amano’s report there are some unfounded accusations against Iran including the use of phrase ‘the country’s non-cooperation with the agency.’ The new IAEA chief who is originally from Japan, has replaced the former chief Mohamad El Baradei from the beginning of this year.

It seems however, the new chief is more prone to Western powers’ influence and he is also showing a greater tendency to use redundant technocratic works. The NAM-states warned that such an illogical approach displayed through the latest report could permanently damage the credibility of the UN nuclear watchdog for years to come.

‘NAM notes with concern, the plausible implications of the departure of standard verification language in the summary of the report of the director general, when stating that ‘Iran had not provided the necessary cooperation to permit the agency to confirm that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities,’ and would like to seek clarification from the agency on this,’ Iran’s English language Press TV reported NAM in a statement on Monday.

Oddly, the new chief of the IAEA views Tehran’s full cooperation as non-cooperation. Iran has been actively cooperating with the agency for years and IAEA inspectors have inspected the country’s nuclear facilities many times. ‘NAM takes note that the latest report of the Director General includes many references to events that transpired prior to the previous report contained in document GOV/2009/74 dated 16 November 2009, and contrary to the expectation of NAM, does not mention the responses provided by Iran to the Agency on several issues,’ the statement read.

Western countries and above all the United States and Israel are truly upset that despite their repeated efforts Iran has finally gained mastery of the nuclear engineering process. From the world’s perspective, this may represent a general sign of weakness within Washington and Tel Aviv. The duo therefore often uses the language of threat against Iran, to mask this chronic weakness.

One point in case is Israel, which is not only illegally stockpiling over 200 nuclear weapons, but it has never even allowed IAEA inspectors to visit its nuclear installations. Lately, the Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak warned that if Western powers fail to halt the Iranian nuclear program; it would take the matter in its own hands.
