China Belittles US Role In Diaoyu Islands Row With Japan

I want to emphasize that this is only a US idea, the territorial dispute between China and Japan over the Diaoyu islands is the business of the two nations only: China's FM official.

November 04, 2010 (Hamsayeh.Net) - China officially rejected US offer to join talks between Beijing and Tokyo over Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. The small-uninhabited chain of islands may be a potential source of new oil and gas in that area.

Last September a small Chinese fishing vessel collided with Japanese coastguard vessels causing an unprecedented diplomatic row between the two Asian countries since the end of WWII. Tokyo arrested the captain of the Chinese ship and held him captive for several weeks.

Recently during her latest trip to the region, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton conveyed her country’s support for Japan over the disputed islands. Later, US said it would like to join trilateral talks with Beijing and Tokyo on those islands.

China, however, flatly rebuffed Washington’s offer. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told said in a statement, ‘I want to emphasize that this is only a US idea, the territorial dispute between China and Japan over the Diaoyu islands is the business of the two nations only.’ He added, ‘China always believes that we should make full use of the current various dialogue and cooperation mechanisms in the Asia Pacific region.’

China is set to become the world’s largest economic power by 2025. Washington and its ever-dwindling circle of allies view China as the biggest threat to Western hegemony enjoyed since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. In this way, US is doing all it could to harness China’s potential for growth by making life all the more difficult around the world’ most populous nation.

With its latest offer to join a round of talks that in fact it has no business whatsoever to be in, the US finds yet another opportunity to exert pressure against China. Washington has been pressuring Beijing over currency devaluation, freedom of Internet, signing of separate military contracts with Taiwan – an island considered as part of China, Tibet issue, human rights violation issues and many other meddlesome tactics in recent years.
